Mission

YouthBuild Trumbull County is an initiative designed to unleash the positive energy of underserved young people in Trumbull County. It is our intention to develop the young people in our program into positive, responsible, and contributing members of our community. We will do this by stressing the importance of education while providing leadership development and job-training. We believe that the youth will not just rebuild their communities, but also rebuild their lives.
Education

Participants are assisted to create their own learning program to meet individual goals. The curriculum is designed to promote interactive learning and hands on experience. The learning opportunities include high school diploma/GED preparation, mathematics,
computer based learning in specialized areas and money management/entrepreneurial training. Upon obtainment of diploma or GED participants will receive a $150 bonus.

YouthBuild Mission

Leadership Development

The Leadership component will focus on soft skills such as work habits, dedication, human potential, conflict resolution, self-esteem, goal setting and anger management. Developing these skills will create positive change in the participants’ lives, with their families, the program, and the community.
Construction

The construction component consists of on site and classroom occupational training that will include but not be limited to carpentry, painting, plumbing, residential electricity, HVAC, concrete work, flooring/carpet installation, furnace installation, roofing and all related areas. The trainees will spend half of their time in the classroom and half of their time in applying what they have learned via work experience. Upon program completion graduates will be certified in the construction field by the National Center for Construction Education and Research.

Follow Up

Follow up activities will be provided for a minimum of 12 months subsequent to the completion of the program. A Job Placement Specialist and staff will be on site to offer and assist the participants in a variety of services. Program alumni receive supportive service referrals, instruction on resume building, job coaching, vocational evaluation, group counseling, job placement assistance, post-secondary guidance and One Stop referrals/participation.

Community Service Projects

During the year, all students engage in community service learning and participation as members of YouthBuild Trumbull County. The Community Service component is a way to reconnect youth to their communities through “doing”. In the process of changing their own lives, students knock down barriers to their development and remove negative stereotypes about out-of-school youth.

Other YouthBuild Projects

YouthBuild participated in Make a Difference Day by constructing a playground for under privileged, low-income grade school children at Shepard of all God’s Children daycare. The students prepared a site for the construction of the new playground as well as, refurbishing and installing the equipment in the designated area.

YouthBuild Trumbull County teamed up with the YWCA to assist in the modernization and renovation of the facility. The first renovations consisted of painting, tearing out deteriorated flooring and reconstructing framework in the entrance way. This project is a vital step toward the revitalization of the city, as well as re-opening vested programs that were once strong.

YouthBuild in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District and The Trumbull MetroParks constructed a 16 x 16 Observation Deck at Mosquito Lake Park. The deck includes a handicap accessible ramp that is designed for the elderly population. The students were recognized for their participation and dedication to the project during a ribbon cutting ceremony where they received certificates of appreciation, hosted by the U.S. Army Cornel of the Pittsburgh District.

YouthBuild teamed up with the City of Warren to assist with the renovation of the Christy House Emergency Shelter. Our students were integral to this project, seeing as Christy House did not have the funds to do the repairs. The vital labor provided by the participants made it possible for the shelter, which houses up to 26 people, to remain open. They were able to obtain skills in masonry via reconstructing brickwork, and repairs to a decaying chimney. Additionally, they expanded their proficiency in roofing, gutter repair and carpentry. YouthBuild was acknowledged in the local newspaper for the students’ devotion in completing a project that was essential and greatly appreciated by the community.

Someplace Safe is an area shelter that seeks to reduce and prevent domestic violence and improve the quality of life for victims of domestic violence. YouthBuild was able to construct a room of shelves for an ongoing food pantry that is readily available for the agency residents. The students even went as far as donating the items to stock the pantry once completed.

YouthBuild worked closely with the Trumbull County MetroParks by helping construct a dog park at Mosquito Lake Park. The participants built fencing, entrance gates and mulching to help complete the project. The youth were recognized on the MetroParks website and in the local newspaper for their hard work and commitment to the completion of the dog park. The participants were awarded certificates at a ribbon cutting ceremony on opening day.
